Official Rules
No purchase necessary, void where prohibited by law.
1. Eligibility
Any individual or group of individuals, known throughout as the “Contestant”, entering the Renesas HEW Target Server Design Contest 2008, herein known as the “Contest”, must be 18 years of age or older. As used herein, “Renesas” refers to Renesas Technology Corp. and its direct and indirect majority and wholly owned subsidiaries. Further, “CMP” refers to CMP Media LLC. and its direct and indirect majority and wholly owned subsidiaries. Any Renesas and CMP employees including the employees of their affiliates, advertising, promotion, production agencies, members of their immediate families, or those with whom they are domiciled are not eligible for entry. Additionally, those individuals living in any country, province or state where the Contest is prohibited, taxed, or otherwise restricted under national, federal, provincial, state and local laws, or through any means of contest regulations or rules is ineligible. Persons who are residents of a country, state, or province that require the contest sponsor to post a bond or prohibit unregistered contests or are ineligible. Neither Renesas nor CMP shall be responsible or liable for any Contestant who enters when it is illegal for them to do so. By entering this Contest, Contestants agree to waive any additional rights in which they may have in regard to contests by the country, state, or province in which they reside.
2. How to Enter
You must complete the following:
- Register for the Contest at www.RenesasInteractive.com/HTScontest2008/register
- Optionally, and while supplies last, you may choose to receive a Contest kit.
- Create your Entry (An “Entry” is a complete design including all documentation, code, schematics, materials, designs, etc. that are submitted as directed herein for consideration in the Contest). If needed, development kits and chip samples can be obtained at www.Renesas.com.
- Digitally submit your Entry using the online Entry form at: www.RenesasInteractive.com/HTScontest2008/entry_form
3. Number of Entries
Contestants may submit as many unique Entries as they so choose. Each Entry must be submitted separately. If one Contestant’s Entry is selected for a prize, that Contestant will be ineligible for any other prizes. Contestants will not be allowed to change or supplement their Entries once it has been submitted. Incomplete or illegible Entries will not be accepted.
4. Group Entries
Where an Entry is submitted by two or more contributors, this fact must be disclosed in the Entry form. One contributor must be designated to receive the prize. For any prizes awarded to multiple contributors, the designated prize winner will be responsible for dividing the prize among others.
Persons or groups may submit more than one Entry. No personal identification or corporate affiliation markings should be on ANY of the submitted materials. The person’s or group’s name, address, or corporate affiliation should ONLY APPEAR ON THE REGISTARATION WEBPAGE for the Contest. Contestants who leave their names in headers, footers, tables of content pages, schematics, etc. may be disqualified.
5. Entry Requirements and Documentation
The Renesas HEW Target Server Design Contest 2008 is for featuring and highlighting the abilities of the HEW Target Server interface. All Entries should consist of Windows based software, hereafter known as (“host”) software, which utilizes the HEW Target Server API and target MCU software, hereafter known as (“target”) software, which takes advantage of, or interacts in some manner with, the host side software.
All Entries must be thoroughly documented. Documentation may be received in the following file format: Word, ASCII, .PDF, .GIF, .TIF, .JPG, .BMP, and .EPS. Do not send any entry documentation in a locked PDF format. Contestants agree to grant Renesas and CMP the right to excerpt selected content from the Entry documentation to create a publishable abstract and in the use of promotional materials unrelated to the Contest. Excerpts may include any amount of textual description, schematics, diagrams, listings, and photographs as deems necessary.
Entry documentation must include the following:
- A detailed text description of both host and target MCU operation.
- Complete code and project file set for host (Windows) software.
- Complete code and HEW project file set for target MCU software.
- Screen capture of the Windows based host software (at least one).
All relevant schematics, flow charts and diagrams should be included. Host (Windows) code and project must be readable and compile, without errors, in either Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or higher, or Microsoft Visual Studio Express (C++, Visual Basic, or C# editions). Target MCU code and project must be readable and compile, without errors, in HEW. Software tool warnings are permitted in both host and target projects provided less than 50 warnings are present for either project. All Entries should be submitted as a single zip file that contains all of the files—including subdirectories and paths for each file—required to build the project error-free.

All Entries must be received on or before 11:59 p.m. EST on July 4, 2008. Entries received or postmarked after 11:59 p.m. EST on July 4, 2008 are ineligible. Renesas and CMP are not responsible or liable for lost, late, or misdirected Entries. Proof of transmission of an Entry will not constitute proof of receipt of said Entry. All Entries shall be submitted in digital format and must be written in English.
6. Judging
All Contest Entries will be judged by a panel of judges selected by CMP on the following: technical merit 20%, originality 20%, usefulness 20%, Windows program interface (appearance) 10%, stability 10%, Code Commenting 10%, Documentation (overall and Windows program help) 10%. In the event of a tie, the tied Entry with the highest score in the technical merit category will be deemed the winner. In the event of a further tie, the tied Entry with the highest score in the usefulness category will be selected. Contest judges will be chosen based on their familiarity with engineering design, Renesas component knowledge, and experience. Contestants agree to abide by all decisions of CMP and the judges, which shall be final and binding with respect to all issues relating to the Contest.
7. Prizes
The prizes awarded are as follows: $5,000 First Prize; $3,000 Second Prize; $2,000 Third and Five (5) $1,000 Honorable Mention prizes will be awarded.
In addition to the $5,000 First Prize, the First place winner will be invited to attend the Renesas Developer’s Conference in San Diego, California in October 2008. Renesas will provide for airfare, transportation, hotel, and Conference pass fees. This portion of the First Place prize shall be separate to other prizes listed herein and shall be not be transferable or redeemable in any other form.
Except as described herein, all prizes will be paid in U.S. dollars. All properly claimed prizes will be awarded. Only the prizes specified in the numbers above will be awarded. All winners will be required to sign an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability prior to being declared a winner. U.S. residents are required to provide a Social Security number before receiving any prize. All winners are required to comply with all reasonable requests for tax identification.
ALL POTENTIAL CONTEST WINNERS ARE SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY RENESAS, AS CONTEST SPONSOR, WHOSE DECISIONS ARE FINAL AND BINDING IN ALL MATTERS RELATED TO THE PROMOTION. Potential winners must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules. Winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements.
The awarded prizes will be mailed to the winners. Renesas is solely responsible for the payment of all prizes. Upon delivery to the winner’s address, Renesas will be deemed to have awarded the prize to the winner with the winner assuming full responsibility for the prize. There will be no substitution for prizes other than as offered. The Contest winners, not CMP or Renesas, are solely responsible for all other arrangements, costs and expenses of and associated with receiving the prize, including without limitation, any taxes or other fees imposed by a government authority. All Contestants and winners agree that by registering online for the Contest they agree to the terms and conditions of the entry rules. All winners will be required to sign an additional liability waiver and statement of eligibility before receiving any prize.
The First place winner will be notified by mail, e-mail, and/or telephone on or about August 15, 2008 but will not be publicly announced until the Renesas Developer’s Conference in October 2008 during Conference proceedings. At the time of notification, the First place winner will be required to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (“NDA”) preventing them from publicly discussing their winning status. In the event that the First place winner cannot or will not sign the NDA, the First place winner shall forfeit any and all prizes and an alternate winner shall be selected. All other winners will be notified by mail, e-mail, and/or telephone on or about October 16, 2008.
The judges’ decisions are final. If a winner fails to respond within 10 days of notification, an alternate winner will be selected. Prizes are not transferable.
8. Contest kits and Shipping
Request for Contest kits will be serviced on a first come, first served basis and only while supplies last. Renesas shall pay for shipping via US Postal Service. No other shipping methods are available. CONTESTANTS OUTSIDE OF THE USA SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY AND ALL DUTIES, TARRIFS, TAXES, OR CHARGES LEVIED against requested kits.
9. Entry Restrictions & Rights
Each Entry submitted must be the original work and property of the person or group who submits it and must not violate the rights of other parties. Contestants warrant and represent that 1) all design ideas and applications submitted are entirely original; 2) Contestant is the owner of all interests in and rights to such designs, and 3) there is no third party which has any proprietary or other interest in, claims or rights to any design ideas submitted under the Contest. This representation is a requirement of participation in the Contest. Contestants agree, represent and guarantee that there are no obligations of any nature, legal or otherwise, which would prohibit, restrict, or interfere with their participation in the Contest or submission of their Entry or Entries. Contestants agree to obtain any necessary clearances, authorizations and/or approvals from any necessary third party participation in all Contest activities and any such approvals which are required as a condition of participation.
Entries may not be offensive or defamatory, as determined by the judges. Entries made will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry. In the event of a dispute, potential winners may be required to provide proof that the potential winner is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the potentially winning entry. By completing an Entry form and submitting an Entry, the Contestant certifies that the Entry in the Contest is the work of his or her or their group, or that he or she has written legal permission from the property owner. Furthermore, each Contestant must read and understand the complete rules of the Contest and agree to abide by them.
No automatic, programmed, robotic or similar means of Entry are permitted. Questions regarding the Contest rules may by submitted by e-mail to DesignContest@RenesasInteractive.com. Renesas will make every effort to answer such queries, but it may choose not to do so in its sole discretion, if providing a response would give an advantage to one Contestant over the others. Contestants will not be reimbursed for any costs incurred or for efforts expended in connection with their participation the Contest. Such costs are the responsibility of Contestants. Renesas is not responsible for lost, late, incomplete, invalid, unintelligible or misdirected Entries, which will be disqualified.
None of the information submitted by the Contestant will be treated by Renesas or CMP as trade secrets, confidential information, or as protected data under any obligation. No confidential relationship is established between Renesas and CMP and Contestants as a result of entering the Contest. The design remains the intellectual property of the Contestant. Contestants hereby grant Renesas and CMP a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, and royalty-free license to copy, reproduce, display, publish and disseminate the Entry, to use the Entries in, or as part of, Renesas products, to implement the Entry, in whole or in part using Renesas products, to modify Entries for such uses, and to publish Entries for such uses by Renesas, CMP, or by customers of Renesas under all applicable intellectual property rights related to any Entry, including (without limitation) patents, trade secrets, copyrights (including all moral and statutory copyrights), and trademarks. To the extent additional documents or actions are required under local law or requirements for an effective license to these rights, title, and interests for commercial purposes, Contestants agree to fully cooperate in executing such further documents and in taking such further actions as are necessary. In such cases, Contestants agree that commercialization license rights shall become effective upon completion of further required actions. The non-exclusive license to Renesas of intellectual property rights, as described above, is free of charge and without remuneration of any kind. Entries, in whole or part may be published in Renesas, CMP, or third party publications. Contestants agree that the opportunity to compete for prizes, to receive publicity, and to increase one’s understanding of Renesas products, represent full and adequate consideration for license of these rights by the Contestants. Prizes do not represent fixed-sum monetary remuneration of the licensing of intellectual property and rights in design submissions.
10. Publicity
The rights of publication described herein refer only to the materials submitted as the Contest Entry. All winning Entries will be posted (electronic/Internet media) at the discretion of Renesas and CMP.
Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest constitutes a winner’s consent to Renesas, CMP, and its agents’ use of winner’s name, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions and/or hometown and state, and any information provided on or with their Entry, for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration. Title of the Entry and abstract will also be posted on the Contest portion of the RenesasInteractive.com website.
By accepting a prize, the winners consent to the use of their name, photograph and/or likeness, address, voice, and statements made by or attributed to them, in perpetuity, in any and all media now known or hereafter developed (including, without limitation, print, broadcast, and Internet), for all legitimate business purposes including advertising and promotional activities without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law.
11. Legal Considerations
No purchase necessary and a purchase or payment of any kind will not increase your chances of winning. By entering the Contest, Contestants agree to release and hold harmless Renesas and CMP and each of their respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, representatives, agents, and employees from any and all liability whatsoever for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising from or in connection with, either directly or indirectly, 1) the awarding, acceptance, receipt, possession, use, and/or misuse of any prize awarded herein; or 2) participation in the Contest or any prize related activities, including but not limited to traveling to or from any prize related activity. Renesas and CMP are not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate entry of information including, but not limited to, technical malfunctions, human error, lost/delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, line failures of any telephone network, computer equipment, software or any combination thereof, entry materials that have been tampered with, or e-mail or mail-in entries that are illegible, late, lost, damaged, postage due, or misdirected. Renesas and CMP are not responsible for any injury or damage to the Contestant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any material in this Contest. Entries that have been tampered with or altered will be void.
Renesas reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend this Contest if it becomes technically corrupted or if for any reason the Internet portion of the program is not capable of running as planned, including infections by computer viruses, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Renesas or CMP that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest promotion.
This Contest shall be interpreted and governed by the substantive laws of the State of California and any applicable laws and regulations of the United States. The Contestant agrees that any and all disputes which cannot be resolved between the parties, and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, exclusively, before a court located in Santa Clara County, CA having competent jurisdiction, which Court shall apply the laws of the State of California without regard to any principles of conflicts of laws, and submission of said Entry constitutes acceptance of such laws. The Contestant further agrees that no claims, judgments or awards shall exceed the amount of the Contest prize and under no circumstances shall include attorney's fees; nor shall any Contestant be permitted to obtain awards for punitive, incidental, consequential, or other similar damages or have any damage awards multiplied or increased for any reason.
